Great read and mindset!! Having lived in latin america in highly volatile economic environments during the 90's (hyperinflation, sharp devaluations, multiple simultaneous operating currencies, etc.) change and quick transformations was the means to survival. A must! Explaining this to our colleagues and leaders in US HQ was a challenge, as smart as they were they were not prepared for the level of turbulence. I used to tell them "we are not a multinational company but a US company doing business overseas" to be multinational you have to embrace and immerse yourself in change. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the thoughtful commentary, Al! I was really struck by your point about leaders who came up in the US with less experience navigating volatile macro environments being unprepared to lead through volatility and uncertainty. I'm reading a book (Nate Silver's latest) about risk right now, and he offers the observation that some high-level poker players who operate *particularly* well in high-stakes, high-risk games have experienced significant turbulence earlier in their lives -- and that this might have made them more ready to handle and self-regulate in that environment.
